Chicory Stout: Dogfish Head Craft Brewery: Stout
My friend Joanne and her daughter Jess are in town for the big game, the first ever Pinstripe Bowl to be played in the new Yankee Stadium. Oh, what festivities are lined up for us in this season! To top it off, my friends Helen and Richard show up for a little traditional pork and sauerkraut. Actually, that’s the traditional meal for New Year’s morning, but with taste so good, why wait. The only problem: what beer makes best with a new New Year’s tradition?
“My God this is good. What is it?” Helen peers into the dark froth of her glass. “I love this.” As my motherinlaw was prone to say, what’s not to love? I mean, the thing mixes up coffee (dry roasted) and caramel, a bitter barley surrounded by earthy hops (that keeps it all from being too sweet), and the whole thing compliments the pork and sauerkraut. (No surprise: I did find a recipe for pot roast with chicory stout gravy on the Dogfish Head blog site.) Best thing (besides the company) is that there more than one bottle and plenty of pork, enough even for New Year’s Day morning.
